As the dawn breaks over the skyline of Kuala Lumpur, the heart of Malaysia pulses with a new rhythm—the beat of sustainability and green technology. The International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2024, now in its 15th year, is setting ambitious targets to catalyze the global race towards net zero. Under the stewardship of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, IGEM 2024 aims to generate a staggering RM4.8 billion in business leads, showcasing 480 exhibitors and attracting 48,000 visitors from over 48 countries. This year’s theme, ‘Race Towards Net Zero: Regional Leadership for Climate Urgency’, underscores the critical role of innovation and international cooperation in addressing the climate crisis.

A Platform for Innovative Green Technologies

IGEM 2024 stands as a beacon of hope and progress in the green technology sector. Minister Nik Nazmi announced the introduction of new zones focused on hydrogen and carbon technologies, reflecting the evolving landscape of environmental solutions. Additionally, the exhibition will feature an integrated partner innovation showcase from global companies, demonstrating the power of collaboration across borders. The spotlight on hydrogen and carbon technologies signals Malaysia’s commitment to exploring cutting-edge solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to a sustainable economy. Learn more about the IGEM 2024 initiatives here.

Expanding Global Reach and Impact

The Malaysian government is not resting on its laurels. Efforts to expand IGEM’s influence beyond the Asia-Pacific region to Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa are underway. This strategic expansion aims to foster international partnerships and attract a diverse array of participants to the conference. Reflecting on IGEM 2023’s success, which generated a record RM11.17 billion in business leads, Minister Nik Nazmi expressed optimism about the potential impact of the 2024 edition on Malaysia’s green economy growth. The announcement of Malaysia’s achievements at the UNFCC COP28 in Dubai, including close to RM50 billion in business collaboration and 17 MoUs and partnerships secured, further underscores the country’s rising stature in the global environmental arena.

Driving Towards a Sustainable Future

In addition to showcasing global green technologies, IGEM 2024 will debut a Central Energy Transition Asia zone, a multi-venue electric mobility exhibition, and a circular economy showcase. These initiatives reflect Malaysia’s holistic approach to sustainability, encompassing energy, transportation, and waste management. The government’s commitment to transitioning its fleet to electric vehicles, as highlighted by Nik Nazmi’s earlier announcement, and utility giant Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s plan to electrify 30% of its operational fleet by 2030, are testament to the country’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint.

As IGEM 2024 approaches, the anticipation builds not just in Malaysia but around the world. This event is more than a conference; it is a clarion call for action in the face of climate urgency. By bringing together innovators, policymakers, and business leaders from across the globe, IGEM 2024 aims to forge new paths towards a sustainable future. The journey to net zero is fraught with challenges, but with initiatives like IGEM, the world moves one step closer to achieving this essential goal.
